First ImproveHF Study Published in the AHA Journal: Circulation Heart Failure
The first study from the HealthSciences Institute-supported ImproveHF study was published, demonstrating wide variation in adherence with ACC/AHA HF guidelines among 167 US cardiology clinics serving 15,381 patients.

The Promise of an Engaged & Prepared 21st Century Health Care Workforce
Few industries or organizations have succeeded in any large-scale change without formally and actively engaging and retooling workers. In health care, the workforce engagement and readiness problem continues to be largely unrecognized or unacknowledged. While it’s been seven years since the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) Crossing the Quality Chasm Report declared that “clinicians need to be retooled” and that “health care training and continuing education programs need to be redesigned,” aside from pockets of improvement, little has changed.

Commonwealth Fund International Survey Cites Poor Chronic Care in US
A new Commonwealth Fund survey published November 13th online in the journal Health Affairs found that among patients in eight industrialized countries, patients in the US are by far the most likely to skip doctor appointments and medications because of the cost. Chronically ill patients in the US were also most likely to experience medical errors, care coordination problems, and high out-of-pocket costs.

Heart Disease in Obese Children
Research presented at the Heart Association's Scientific Sessions 2008 in November found that the thickness of artery walls of children and teenagers who are obese or have high cholesterol resembled the thickness of artery walls of an average 45-year-old. A related study showed that obese children are much more likely to have enlarged hearts than those of healthy weight.

HF Physician Visits, Co morbidities and Medication Use
Another research study presented at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions 2008 in November found that patients with Heart Failure see three times as many providers (23) and receive 61 prescriptions annually. Additionally 46% of HF patients have diabetes, 46% COPD and 32% renal disease.
